Most of you probably already know, that August 1-7 was World breastfeeding Awareness Week. Under photographer Leilani Roger’s umbrella, 40ish photographers joined her in this vision she had of photographing moms nursing their babies in everyday ways. Publicly. Without cover or shame. This is what breastfeeding really looks like. As a nursing mom and photographer, I jumped at the chance to participate.
Click here for the one-and-only Leilani’s blog post about the project this year. Also, the other photographers in the project are linking to each other in a circle; please check out Kayla Gonzales and follow along to support all of their amazing work and dedication to World Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
A few of my personal favorite moments from this project –
Don’t you just love how screenshots have become the new newspaper clippings?
I am, of course, beyond ecstatic that my photo was chosen not only to be included in various articles on BabyCenter and Cafe Stir, among others all over the world, and also used as the feature photo and shown on the front page on the Huffington Post (that’s my shot accompanying Leilani’s article – at 95k likes!). As I said yesterday, this week has been a whirlwind of excitement. I never would have imagined it would have exploded the way it did – but as a breastfeeding mom, I am more thrilled than anything that this topic is getting the (positive) attention it deserves. The reactions I have seen and experienced have been nothing but encouraging, and I think that speaks volumes about what a progressive area I am fortunate enough to live in. Thank you all so much for supporting me and supporting this project. And an especially huge thank you to the moms who responded to my initial model calls and believed in this crazy little idea.
I also have to send a huge shout out and thank you to Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia for welcoming me and three other mamas with open arms to shoot there. Seriously, they have an amazing CSA and tons of great things for kids to do – check them out!! And thank you to Crystal Corona Photography for capturing some behind the scenes for us.
Here are some of my favorite shots all of the amazing mamas and adorable babies I got to photograph this week:
and my favorite group shot, of four incredible mamas nursing their littles in downtown Leesburg:
JenniferThese are just so beautiful and touching! I’m so happy you were a part of this. The shots of the moms nursing in the fields and trees were so serene. I just adore the whole project!
